Harvest Moon Folk Society is a community of musicians, dancers, and dance callers whose mission is to promote, sponsor, and encourage participation in folk and traditional dance for people in and around upstate SC.  We hold several public contra dances each month at River Falls Lodge in northern Greenville county, SC. We also have a monthly CityDance at various locations in the city of Greenville, SC.

River Falls Lodge dances are held on most first, third, and fourth Saturdays, and one Friday a month (experienced dancers only).  Everyone is welcome at Saturday night pot luck dinners (6:30 pm).  We recommend newcomers attend the orientation session which starts promptly at 7:30.  The dance is 8:00 to 11:00 pm.  Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for teens 14-17.  Camping space is available for out-of-town dancers who want to spend the night at the lodge. For CityDance information please check our dance calendar for time and location of this dance.

In addition to our regular dances, we hold a weekend festival – MoonDance – in September at Table Rock State Park, and a costume dance – Monster Mash – in the fall at River Falls Lodge. All Harvest Moon Folk Society dances are held in an alcohol- and drug-free environment. Smoking is not allowed in the building or on the grounds inside the white fence at River Falls Lodge.

Contra dance is a high energy, non-competitive social dance form done to live roots-based music.  The word “contra” refers to the formation of the dances in lines that are “opposite” to each other.  The dances resemble madcap English country dances and require fast reflexes.  Each dance is taught briefly, so no experience is needed; however, we urge newcomers to attend the 30-minute orientation session that precedes Wednesday and Saturday dances (Friday Advanced Dances do not have the orientation session).  It is not necessary to bring a partner.  Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
